VIDEO: Military plane buzzes Vernon - 5 times

City not told of any fly-by from any military branch; flew past Vernon Airport

Maybe the pilot was looking for retirement real estate. Lakefront property. Farm land. Doubtful their visit was wildfire- or flood-related.

Whatever he or she was doing in the skies above Vernon Friday afternoon is anyone’s guess.

Okanagan Landing resident Kerry Hutter caught on video one of five fly-by’s by what certainly looks and sounds like a military fighter jet.

“It came north to south, went up and over and circled around Middleton Mountain, then over East Vernon, came back, and they did this five times,” said Hutter of the unexpected air show at around 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 19.

“On the last pass, they went out over Okanagan Lake, broke right over Bella Vista and headed in the direction of Kamloops.”

A phone call to the Canadian military went unanswered, but at the Vernon Airport, the person who answered thephone thought the show was great. They just wish they’d known about it.

“We were completely unaware of any fly-by,” said the person, who did not want to be identified. “There were no advisories from any military branch but they put on quite a show. It was really cool.”

At one point, said the person at YVE, the jet had its landing gearing down but then moved the gear back up, added power and headed out over Okanagan Lake.
