More than 60 squash players from across B.C. are converging in Vernon this weekend.
The 2024 Nixon Wenger Vernon Squash Open Tournament takes place Friday, April 19 to Sunday, April 21 at The Roster.
The community is invited to check out the showcase of squash talent with draws available for all levels, including a ladies draw.
“We’re excited to welcome players from various clubs around the province to Vernon for a weekend of competitive squash,” said Michael Arding, tournament director and owner of Nokomis Landscaping. “The tournament has seen steady growth in recent years, and we’re proud to continue that tradition.”
In the open division, all eyes will be on last year’s runner-up and The Roster’s club pro, Peter Trafford, as he aims to reclaim the title he won in 2022.
Trafford’s efforts in growing the squash community in Vernon have been commendable, and his presence adds excitement to the competition.
However, he faces tough competition from defending champion Jay Anderson of Bonnington, B.C., who clinched the title last year.
Other top players, including Shawn Zwierzchowski from Chilliwack, Jake Hooker from Kelowna, and Graham Kerford from Victoria, will also be vying for the title, promising thrilling matches throughout the tournament.
This year’s tournament also features a full women’s draw, highlighting the growing interest and participation of women in the sport.
“Rosters is running squash sessions for ladies twice a week, and we’re thrilled to see the women’s draw at full capacity as we continue to grow the sport with a stronger women’s’ presence,” said Trafford.
