Letter: Commuter ticketed for using parking lot adjacent to bus stop

I thought the point of the bus system was to make our city more environmentally friendly.

To the editor:

Yesterday I discovered a parking ticket on my car after returning from classes at UBCO. I hadn’t realized that the Montana’s/Pier 1 lot had time constraints.

I’m a student, to help financially, I drive to the bus stop, take the bus to and from school and then drive to work which is not near the bus system. I had chosen this lot since the crossing at McCurdy is not safe due to the construction.

Today, I drove along the 97 bus route and almost every bus stop along that route has a large parking lot near it. Most of them have signs preventing bus users from parking there.

I thought the point of the bus system was to make our city more environmentally friendly, accessible to all, and reduce vehicles on the road.

I challenge Montana’s/Mark’s, Walmart, Home Sense, Parkinson Rec, Orchard Park and any other places along the bus routes with large parking lots to make parking available to bus users. Maybe our city council and mayor can work with companies to provide parking for bus users or some sort of free park n’ ride. The stores along this route all benefit from the bus system by bringing patrons to their area for shopping. So maybe they could provide a benefit for those using the bus system.
