Chamber views aren’t my views

Re: Cash needed to keep amenities, Calendar February 2

With all due respect to the member businesses, why is it my responsibility as a taxpayer to fund the promotional activities of the Chamber of Commerce membership? If tourism is growing importance and those involved in that industry feel that promotion is needed then it is their responsibility to promote it not mine.

I have no issue with supporting the museum or art gallery but there is a significant difference between those organizations and the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is a business lobby group and not a community organization. The parent organization of the Chamber of Commerce frequently lobby against increases to the minimum wage and often oppose environmental issues which benefit all.

I don’t take issue with them representing their membership but I believe they should pay their own way. I don’t agree with their politics and I don’t believe that my tax dollars should go to a political organization.
