February 7, 2022
The beautiful spirit of Linda Martin broke free from this mortal coil on February 7, 2022, at the age of 72 with her beloved husband, John, by her side.
Linda was raised in Okanagan Centre by her parents, Morley "Tex" and Grace, with siblings Terry (Heather) Houston, Fred (Adam) Willis, Anita (Jim) Courtney, Rod (Mavoureen) Houston, and Lance Houston.
Linda married Rod Hiebert in 1969, and they had two children, Kathy and Dave (Nicola) Hiebert. As a single mother with a love of books, Linda bravely opened a used bookstore, "Treasure Chest of Books" in 1983, and later worked in administrative positions at Okanagan North Growers Co-Operative and the City of Kelowna. Linda tried hard to raise her children to not be jerks and mostly succeeded.
Linda married John Martin on her birthday in 1986 and was devoted to him until her last breath. They greatly enjoyed camping and fishing together at many lakes in the area. Whether it was camping, fishing, having a beer with friends, or just walking around her yard to look at her flowers and garden, Linda was a free spirit and loved being outdoors.
Linda's former teammates on the "Stroker's Pin Ups" ladies' softball team will remember her as an enthusiastic participant in the Outhouse Race and any other crazy thing they could think up. With a playful spirit and dedication to the importance of laughter and having fun, Linda was serious about being silly. Often seen wearing wacky headbands or novelty jewellery, Linda was always up for a game of cards, dice, or one of the new board games she subjected her children to every Christmas (Snakes and Ladders, anyone?).
Having given up on the prospect of grandchildren years ago, Linda embraced her "grandbaby kitties" with grace and love, and will be remembered fondly by friends and neighbours, nieces and nephews, in-laws and outlaws, cats, randos on the street, and her best friend of over 50 years, Yvonne (Toby) Redecopp.
The family doesn't know what to do about a Celebration of Life or memorial (Mom always took care of these things), but we would not want anyone to risk getting COVID-19 by gathering in a large group at this time. Please enjoy a beer, sit outside, and do or wear something silly in her memory. Love to you all.
