A Vernon man was handed a two-year jail sentence for assaulting a police officer, on May 13.
Blake Everett Dergez was sentenced, in a Vernon B.C. Supreme Court, to 750 days for an assault that took place Sept. 9, 2021 against an RCMP officer.
Dergez was credited with having served 214 days in custody before his sentencing hearing. That leaves him with 536 days left to serve.
The charge of assaulting a police officer resulted in a 24-month sentence. Dergez also received a four-month consecutive sentence for uttering threats, and one month each for four breaches of probation orders. One of those months runs consecutive, while the other sentences are concurrent, meaning they would be served at the same time.
That produced a total sentence of 29 months. However, considering the principle of totality, the presiding judge on May 13, found that a sentence of 25 months was appropriate.
Dergez must submit a DNA order, a victim fine surcharge of $200 per count, and is subject to a 10-year firearms prohibition.
Dergez has a long list of criminal offences dating back to 2003. Last November, he was sentenced to time served for assaulting two correction officers at Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver in 2022.
