Residents rally to keep the racket down.
Coldstream council voted for the Mt. Ida Drive pickleball court schedule to not change from Fridays to Saturdays.
Residents in the Coldstream neighbourhood expressed their concerns with noise and parking at the courts at the Monday meeting.
“The increase in traffic and parking congestion when there are more young children out could be a disaster in the making,” said Gail and Derek Watson.
Gordon and Beverly Reid attended the meeting and said many of the local residents have been subdued to name-calling and believe the two weekend days are needed as time off from it all.
“There are alternatives like MacDonald Park,” said Beverly Reid.
Reid said although consequences for the player’s behaviour is important, his main request was to keep the courts quiet on Saturdays and Sundays.
“I support doing it, but not for club play,” said Coun. Peter McClean, who was the sole vote to move the change.
The initial request harboured 50 supporters who wanted to swap the days.
Suzanne Bell requested the day change because of the number of players who work during the times the court is open.
“Many folks who are still in the work force play pickleball recreationally and would like to play with their kids, family, friends, or company on their weekend days off,” said Bell.
The schedule will stay as Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m..
