Blasting work to close Highway 97 north of Summerland

Blasting work is set to close Highway 97 north of Summerland on Thursday, Nov. 30.

As crews continue to stabilize the site of the rockslide — located between Callan Road and Okanagan Lake Provincial Park — the highway will be forced to close from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Highway 97 in the area will reopen as soon as the work and safety assessments are complete, the province said.

A detour around the slide area can be found on the 201 Forest Service Road. It will remain open until further notice.

The section of Highway 97 first closed on Aug. 28, after a significant rockslide.

Periodic blasting work and temporary closures have followed in the several weeks since.

It was on Sept. 11, when the highway opened to single-lane alternating traffic. Two lanes of traffic north of Summerland have been open since Sept. 21.

Highway 97 will continue to support two lanes of traffic throughout the winter, the province said.

“A contractor will carry out regular maintenance to ensure these lanes remain open and safe for the travelling public,” reads a provincial press release.

If using the detour road, the province adds that drivers should be prepared with good winter tires, food, water and fuel.
