Great pitching leads Okanagan College Coyotes to 3-1 weekend against Calgary

It was another successful weekend for the Okanagan College Coyotes baseball team as they went 3-1 in their four-game set against the defending champs, the University of Calgary Dinos.

The week three Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) action started on Friday night (Apr. 12) when the Coyotes shutout the Dinos 8-0.

Cory Lawson was outstanding on the mound, earning the win as he threw seven innings, striking out 10 batters. He leads the league with three wins.

Offensively, third baseman Coleman Kawaguchi went 4-4 in the game with a RBI, a walk, and two runs scored. He was one of three Coyotes with a multi-hit game.

On Saturday, the two teams played a doubleheader, where the Coyotes kept the shutout streak going in the first game, cruising to a 4-0 win.

Right-hander Teagan Ribbink earned his second win of the season after throwing eight shutout innings, allowing only four hits while striking out nine batters. The outing lowered his ERA to 1.14. He also leads the CCBC with 30 strikeouts.

Kawaguchi drove in two more runs in the game as he went 1-2 with a walk.

In the third game of the weekend, the Coyotes exploded to score 10 runs in the first four innings of their way to a 11-7 win. Centre-fielder Adrian Orioli led the offense, going 4-4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jack Swinton also went 3-5 at the plate.

Despite allowed seven runs over three innings, Anthony Wyslobocki earned the win for the Coyotes. Corbin Mossop came into the game in relief and threw six shutout innings.

After starting the weekend 3-0, the Coyotes fell on Sunday by the score of 6-2.

With the 3-1 weekend, the Coyotes are now 8-4 on the season, sitting second in the CCBC standings behind the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.

This upcoming weekend, Okanagan College closes their stretch of 14 straight home games to begin the season. On Friday, April 19, they welcome the University of Fraser Valley to Elks Stadium for a doubleheader taking place at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The two teams will enjoy an off day on Saturday and finish the weekend with two more games on Sunday, April 21 down in Chilliwack. Game times are at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
