Kalamalka Lake has been nominated in a contest to name the Best Public Space in Canada in the Canadian Institute of Planners’ annual competition to recognize Canada’s truly special places.
“Kalamalka Lake is central to the identity of Lake Country, Vernon and Coldstream and is probably one of the most photographed lakes in the Okanagan Valley due to its outstanding colour and character, not to mention its value as a natural and recreational resource,” said Mark Koch, director of planning and development for Lake Country.
Generations of residents and visitors have enjoyed the shores and waters of Kalamalka Lake for recreation and a source of drinking water; the agricultural community has appreciated this rich aquatic resource to nurture orchards and vineyards; and the First Nations have valued its vibrant contribution to life since time immemorial. All seek to preserve and continue to enjoy Kalamalka Lake as an outstanding public space of incredible natural beauty.
“There is an urban legend here that says Kalamalka Lake was named one of the 10 most beautiful lakes in the world by National Geographic back in the ’60,” said Mary Jo O’Keefe, acting mayor of Vernon. “When you see the colours of the lake start to change and the streaks of turquoise go into the lake’s depths it is not hard to believe that this is truly a special place in a very special corner of the world.”
“It is great to live and work in an area that has the jewel of the Okanagan—Kalamalka Lake—as its centrepiece,” said Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick. “We hope everyone shares our belief that Kalamalka Lake is one of the Best Places in Canada and will vote in the contest.”
