Derrick's Steakhouse in downtown Kelowna is now taking reservations for opening day.
Taking over the former location of Raudz Regional Table on Water Street, owner Ross Derrick said the space has a new look with a touch of the past still intact.
"We didn't put a nail in the walls in the renovations," Derrick said.
There were no structural changes made in the approximately five weeks Derrick has been working on the space. The booths were redone, Raudz old tables refinished and the owner said they focused more on the atmosphere they wanted to offer.
A big piece of the old restaurant that people will still be able to enjoy is the large communal table, a centrepiece of the restaurant.
"We had a really hard time trying to figure out what to do with that piece," Derrick said, noting that his original thought was to get rid of it. After hearing that the man who built the table, along with neighbours and other carpenters were worried about the fate of the piece it was decided the table would stay.
"One, it's good for the community, and two, it's a piece of art, frankly. It's made from wood that's extinct now. It has a history to it."
The steakhouse will have a number of entrees available. Steaks will be served garnished with vegetables, potatoes and puree, with other sides available as add-ons.
Derrick was excited to talk about the two-page wine list "that is packed full with just completely beautiful wines that, quite frankly, are quite affordable for the quality of the wines we've put on the list."
Derrick's Steakhouse opens for close friends and family on June 21 and to the public on June 28.
Derrick also runs Broken Anchor and The Globe at Big White.
"I love this industry, I love opening restaurants, I love running restaurants, I love working in them, I love serving people. So, I don't really go to work. I go to somewhere I enjoy being."
