Rockets team up with Canadian Mental Health Association

The Kelowna Branch of the CMHA and the Kelowna Rockets are teaming up to address the importance of mental health during the Rockets upcoming home game against the Kamloops Blazers Feb. 2.

The campaign is part of an ongoing commitment by the Rockets and the CMHA Kelowna to implement the Talk Today program. Talk Today is a support resource available to players that addresses mental health and suicide prevention.

“We know that the stigma associated with mental health issues often keeps people from seeking help when they need it,” said Aaryn Secker, community education facilitator at CMHA Kelowna. “This Talk Today event aims to reduce that stigma by starting a conversation about mental health and encouraging people of all ages to seek help when they need it.”

Over the last three years, every Rockets player has had the opportunity to participate in safeTALK suicide alertness training. WHL teams are now connected to their local branches of the CMHA as a ongoing partnership to offer help, support, and resources to anyone in need.

“We’re extremely grateful to partner with the CMHA Kelowna to host a Talk Today event to increase public awareness and to promote mental health in our community,” said Anne-Marie Hamilton of the Kelowna Rockets.

The Rockets game on Feb. 2 will feature a CMHA-run kiosk for fans to learn more about mental health, videos featuring Rockets players talking about the importance of mental health, and public announcements about mental health.
