Rookie netminder stops 40 shots in Kelowna’s last game before Christmas break

James Porter stopped 40 shots for his first career shutout to lead the Kelowna Rockets to a 5-0 victory over the hometown Saskatoon Blades Friday in WHL action.

Kyle Topping scored twice for the Rockets (20-11-1-2) who closed out their six-game, pre-Christmas eastern tour with a 3-3 record.

Kole Lind, who was released Thursday by the national junior team, had three assists for a six-point weekend.

Lind scored a hat trick a night earlier in a 7-3 Kelowna win over Prince Albert.

Carsen Twarynski, with his team-leading 24th, Liam Kindree and Jack Cowell also scored for the Rockets.

Kelowna was without captain Cal Foote and assistant captain Dillon Dube who made the final roster for Canada’s national junior team.

Team Canada will open IIHF World U20 Championship Boxing Day in Buffalo, NY.

Following the break, the Rockets return to action Wednesday, Dec. 27 at home to the Kamloops Blazers.
