Competitive tennis for some, just plain fun for others

Some of the best players in the Okanagan Valley came to Lake Country tennis club event.

The Lake Country tennis club held another interesting doubles tournament on Sunday June 8 under perfect weather conditions. There was fierce competition with some of the best players from throughout the Okanagan Valley at the event.

Partners were paired at random in this event providing an unknown element to each match. In the end, after four hours of heavy competition, the top players emerged.

Jim Cooper from Kelowna took the title with 16 games won out of a possible 24.

Okanagan Centre grandmother Brenda Barritt stepped up to the plate to take the top woman title with 15 games won.

Ben Johnson had the second highest win total for men with 15 games won while there was a four-way tie for third place with Stevan Pastor, Caron Smed, Sheena Moe and Yvonne Faulkner each winning 14 games.

Shannon Monssen, Ian Corrie, Dan Faulkner, and previous winner Jay Thomson all won 13 games while Darlene Homenchuk and Kathy Walraven won 12 games each.

Overall winner Jim Cooper was very pleased with his surprise victory.

“I don’t usually play this well,” he said. “The tennis gods were smiling on me today. I also had some very good partners to help me to victory.”

In the meantime, for anyone looking to bump up their game, or learn the great game of tennis the Lake Country tennis club meets every Friday at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m. at the Woodsdale Road courts.
