West Kelowna recruits new firefighters

West Kelowna Fire Rescue is looking for career firefighters and paid on call firefighters

West Kelowna Fire Rescue will be accepting applications for career and paid on call firefighters positions until Feb. 25.

West Kelowna Council approved the hiring of eight new career firefighters, and two vacant positions, means West Kelowna is recruiting for 10 full-time career firefighters. West Kelowna Fire Rescue is also seeking 25 paid on call firefighters.

Career Firefighters

Firefighting is a physically challenging and mentally demanding occupation. Firefighters must respond quickly and work effectively as part of a vital team. Firefighters perform functions in a number of areas, including, but not limited to, the following:

· Firefighting

· Promotion of fire prevention and public education

· Protecting both the public and the environment from hazardous materials concerns

· Emergency medical care through the First Responder Program

· Public service

· Post-fire inspections and overhaul

· Performing auto extrication at accident scenes

· Participation in a variety of training programs to maintain or upgrade the latest firefighting methods and technology

West Kelowna Fire Rescue is seeking 10 full-time, career firefighters. Paid On Call Firefighters

West Kelowna Fire Rescue is seeking individuals interested in filling 25 paid on call firefighter positions in the community. After successfully completing training, paid on call firefighters support West Kelowna Fire Rescue career firefighters during active emergency responses as well as through public service and education. Paid on call firefighters must be at least 18-years-old, residents of the City of West Kelowna or Westbank First Nation (IR 9 & 10), and are required to attend a minimum of calls and ongoing training.

Anyone interested in becoming a paid on call firefighter is encouraged to attend an information session hosted by West Kelowna Fire Rescue on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at Station 34, 3399 Gates Road, West Kelowna.
