Stacey Praught was driving to take her dog to the beach when she witnessed the clay slope give way above Highway 97 in Summerland on May 15.
“We were turning when I saw a dust cloud and told my daughter to start recording and we got it just in time. It was pretty surreal,” said Praught.
The video shows the landslide producing a huge dust cloud expanding over the lake and towards her vehicle.
The dust came really fast and she had to quickly roll up the windows.
The major slide took place around 6:45 p.m. on Monday, May 15. The entire slide was approximately 120-metres long, and it came less than a month after two other slides.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will be doing a further assessment of the slope stability.
The slide covered a 40-metre-long section of the highway and all four lanes of traffic. The silt and clay hillside gave way abruptly sending material tumbling down onto the road in a large cloud.
In some lanes, the debris was at least eight feet deep.
Traffic is still limited to a single alternating lane, and the ministry did not provide an estimate for when the highway will be fully reopened.
Debris is still piled up at the site.
