Music legend Red Robinson is suffering from hearing loss.

From humble beginnings to being described as a pioneer of rock and roll, the name Red Robinson became household over a decades-long career in music.

Robinson, who spun his first records as a high school student in the 1950s, is now putting his name behind a new hearing aid and will be appearing in Kelowna and West Kelowna on Wednesday to speak about the hearing issues he is now suffering with.

Robinson is one of several speakers that will present at a better hearing expo being held by Nexgen Hearing in Kelowna and West Kelowna on Wednesday. The purpose of the event is to promote a revolutionary hearing aid which was released by Oticon Canada this past summer. Called Opn, the hearing aid is said to provide people with hearing loss improved speech understanding, a reduction in listening effort and up to 20 percent better recall of conversations.

Robinson will speak how he has struggled with hearing and how the new device is working for him.

“I have personally fit over 60 of the Opn hearing aids since its release and have had amazing success with it,” said Colin VanBergen, an audiologist and owner at Nexgen Hearing. “Over 90 per cent of my clients who have tried the Oticon Opn hearing aids are reporting a moderate to significant improvement in the most challenging listening environments possible.”

VanBergen added there are still challenges in noisy settings with the new technology, “the Opn hearing aid has made the biggest improvement I have experienced with any hearing aid release in my 16 years of working as an audiologist.”

Robinson became a well-known deejay in the 1950s and a new book released in October tells the story of a kid who “began spinning hits while in high school in the early 1950s, laying the foundation for what would become a glamorous, impossible-to-stop and ultimately fulfilling career that has made him a household name west of the Rockies.”

Robinson’s vast career highlights are remarkable, from introducing The Beatles to the stage, ushering Randy Bachman to the status of superstardom, and as part of EXPO ‘86, presenting The Legends of Rock’n’Roll featuring Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Righteous Brothers.
