One RCMP officer has been shot and a man arrested after an hours-long standoff at a remote cabin in Argenta, two hours north of Nelson.

Kaslo RCMP said the tense incident began Thursday evening when police attended a rural property to execute arrest warrants on a man known to them.

When confronted, the 28-year-old man fled from officers and retreated inside a nearby cabin. The man then allegedly fired shots, which injured the officer.

That began a long exchange between the suspect and RCMP crisis negotiators, which ended with the man in custody.

The man has not been identified and charges have not been laid. It’s not clear why police had a warrant for his arrest.

The injured officer, who has not been identified, has been hospitalized with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

While we always hope that situations such as this come to a swift and safe resolution, we are thankful that our officer is expected to fully recover and no one else has been injured, said Chief Supt. Brad Haugli of the Southeast District RCMP in a statement.
