Peachland pursues a grant for crime prevention
Peachland agreed to apply for a grant in order to work with Westbank First Nation and West Kelowna to tackle crime.
“The BC Ministry of Public Safety currently has a $50,000 start-up grant available to communities for the development of a Situation Table. A Situation Table (the HUB) is a crime prevention initiative by community safety partners,” according to a report which was presented to council.
“The Situation Table would function to bring together, on a regular basis, professionals and specialists from several community agencies to deal with high risk social and personal situations that cannot be addressed by a single agency, and which if left unattended, would likely lead to criminal offending or victimization. Typically, a HUB is the gathering of devoted employees from social agencies, health care workers, educators, governments, and police, who have the common goal of sharing information for the benefit of a person at-risk, and assisting that individual with access to services swiftly and efficiently.”
Council decided to unanimously pass a motion to pursue the grant during Tuesday night’s regular council meeting.
Peachland repairs a wharf
A wharf in downtown Peachland is in rough shape and councillors unamiously decided to allocate $50,000 in order to repair it.
The wharf, located along Beach Avenue, is nearing the end of its life, according to a report which was presented to council at Tuesday night’s regular council meeting, Jan. 22.
The wharf was supposed to be repaired in 2018, but prior to that flooding in the region pushed back the repair date to 2019.
Staff are recommending the approval of the early budget request, so the wharf can be repaired before the summer.
A multi-year plan is in place for the restoration of the wharf, and if approved, the first two phases will be completed.
