Oyama gets it four way stop back at north end of Lake Country

Ministry of Transportation still in control of Pelmewash turns Oyama and Pelmewash back to four way stop

A traffic change is being welcomed in Oyama.

The Ministry of Transportation has taken the intersection of Oyama Road and Pelmewash Parkway from a two-way stop to a four-way stop.

“There were numerous letters to the ministry from residents and there was a motion from district council about wanting a four-way stop,” said Owen Dickie, a Lake Country councillor.

When the new upper-level Highway 97 was opened last year, the intersection of the old highway (Pelmewash Parkway) and Oyama Road became a four-way stop.

But in August 2014, the ministry turned it into a two-way stop, with Pelmewash Parkway turning into a throughway.

“There were concerns with pedestrians being able to cross the road,” said Dickie.

“A majority of the students at the school live on the west side of Pelmewash Parkway.”

Dickie is pleased that a four-way stop has been reinstalled.

“It provides some traffic calming there,” he said of speeding vehicles.

“We were starting to see some large trucks using Pelmewash Parkway to avoid the large hill (on the upper-level highway).
