No injuries were sustained after a low bed commercial semi-tractor trailer unit collided with a sport-utility vehicle in a busy intersection Monday afternoon in Lake Country.

On Feb. 20 at 1:36 pm, emergency crews rushed to the scene of a motor vehicle collision between a semi-tractor hauling a loader on a flat deck low bed trailer and a Nissan Murano SUV in the intersection of Highway 97 and Oceola Road.

RCMP have learned that the driver of a northbound Nissan Murano allegedly executed a U-turn in the intersection directly in front of a southbound Kenworth semi-tractor trailer unit.

Due to the significant damage sustained to the driver’s side of the Nissan, crews with the Lake Country Volunteer Fire Department relied on the Jaws of Life to extract the driver trapped inside.

The driver of the Nissan, a 76-year-old Kelowna man, was assessed by emergency paramedics and released at the scene.

“It’s a miracle the driver is still alive,” was the reaction of a driver who was an independent witness to the crash.

“This incident serves as an important reminder to all motorists, who are urged to complete legal turns only or use designated U-turn routes to safely change directions on all roadways, especially highways,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

If you witnessed this crash and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to contact the Lake Country RCMP Detachment at 250-766-2288.
