A new code of conduct for Kelowna council sets out rules councillors must follow in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities as elected officials.
The code requires councillors to act in the public interest and conduct business with honesty, integrity, respect, transparency, leadership, collaboration and accountability.
It also lays out complaint and resolution procedures which would include a preliminary assessment and, if a complaint is accepted for investigation, a referral to a third-party investigator.
During open or closed meetings the code states that councillors shall not interact or communicate with members of the public via email, text or other social media applications.
Council members are also not to accept gifts or personal benefits, except in accordance with the Community Charter (section 105).
A staff report on the new code, which will be presented to council at its June 5 open meeting, says it promotes accountability, transparency and effective and efficient decision-making.
