A convenience store that burned down on the morning of June 4 in Kelowna is said to be the result of arson, according to police.

A man has been arrested for causing the blaze, though he was released from custody the following day, with a first court appearance scheduled for Oct. 9.

Nobody was harmed in the fire.

“This incident was not random in nature and we do not believe there is risk to other members of the public or businesses from the individual who was arrested,” said Cpl. Michael Gauthier of the Kelowna RCMP. “An extensive risk assessment is always conducted before someone is released from custody and appropriate conditions have been put in place.”

RCMP are now looking for video evidence from the area at the time, in the areas of Bernard Ave, Burtch Rd and the Parkinson Recreation Centre.

Anyone with information can contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 and reference Kelowna RCMP File #2023-30917, or remain anonymous via crimestoppers.net.
