Conditions on the Coquihalla Highway are treacherous.

It was another terrible night on the Coquihalla Highway and it’s continuing today.

A Vancouver couple made the trek from the city to a cabin near Big White overnight and were able to make it to their destination, although it took three times the usual travel time.

Icy conditions,, snow, freezing rain and big rigs pulled over kept motorists either stranded or crawling along.

Vancouver couple Pat and Emma set out for the BC Family weekend from Vancouver, heading to the Okanagan Friday night.

The trip took almost 14 hours and they just arrived near Big White on Saturday morning.

“There were hundreds of semis everywhere,” said Pat. “They got caught on the hill coming out of Hope. They didn’t have their chains on. It was icy as hell.”

Highway 5 Northbound from the Portia interchange to Merritt was closed this morning but expected to open up around 9 a.m. as crews are working to clear traffic back-ups.
