A landslide on Thursday evening left residents of Crescent Beach in Summerland trapped and cut off from the rest of the community.

The landslide occurred around 9 p.m., blocking a portion of Lakeshore Drive North.

Witnesses in the area reported a large cloud of dust from the landslide.

Linda Tynan, Summerland’s chief administrative officer, said municipal works crews, firefighters and police responded to clear the road.

The road was reopened around 11:15 p.m.

Lakeshore Drive is the only road connecting Crescent Beach to the rest of the community. If the road is cut off, an alternate access is available.

Tynan said a fire truck and firefighters were sent to the alternate access, to ensure fire protection was available if needed.

“We didn’t have to use that access road,” she said.

The cause of the landslide is still under investigation.
