Uniformed members of the Kelowna RCMP were in the 4000 block of Gordon Drive early Thursday morning when they attempted to apprehend a 50-year-old Kelowna man that was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.
The suspect fled the area in his vehicle, but investigation into his whereabouts led police to a rural area near the trestles in Myra Canyon.
In coordination with the Police Dog Service, the Kelowna RCMP tracked the suspect into a steep snowy ravine where he was located suffering from injuries.
The intensely steep terrain prevented officers from being able to extract the suspect safely. Members of the Kelowna Search and Rescue and Fire Department were called to assist in a high angle rescue operation.
“During this operation, police officers found a safe location within the ravine and carried the male to it where they then lit a fire and wrapped him in blankets to prevent hypothermia,” said Cpl. Meghan Foster.
Just after 8:30 a.m. first responders were able to rescue the suspect and transport him to hospital for treatment. He is to appear in court for his outstanding warrants once he is released from hospital.
