Update: 3:50 p.m.

On Aug. 31 at 1:15 pm, RCMP were called assist BC Ambulance Services who were responding to the scene of a collision involving a cyclist near the intersection of Highway 33 West and Aurora Crescent in Rutland, according to the RCMP in a news release.

Police have learned that the vehicle involved, a blue Toyota Rav4, was starting from a stopped position on Aurora Crescent, making a right hand turn into in the westbound lanes of Highway 33 West, when the collision occurred with the eastbound cyclist, the release said.

RCMP was told emergency medical crews initially arrived on scene to find the male cyclist unconscious. The cyclist, a 26-year-old Kelowna man, has since been transported to hospital, by BC Ambulance Service, for further medical assessment and treatment of his injuries. RCMP are unable to classify the severity of the man’s injuries at this time, the release said.

“Our officers are investigating, in an effort to determine exactly what factors contributed to this unfortunate crash,” states RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “Given the information gathered at the scene, police suspect that the cyclist may have been riding on the sidewalk alongside the highway, in the opposite direction of the flow of traffic.”

The driver, a 31-year-old Vernon woman, remained at the scene and is cooperating with police in their investigation.

The collision investigation continues at this time, charges have not yet been laid, and witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to contact Cst. Marvin Park of the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
