UPDATE: One dead after motorcycle collision on Highway 97 near Peachland

The collision closed Highway 97 off-and-on throughout Sunday afternoon

UPDATE: 5:30 p.m.

One person has died following a motorcycle crash south of Peachland on Sunday afternoon.

Just after noon, the West Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision between a pickup truck and a motorcycle on Highway 97 at Hardy Street, Peachland.

When officers arrived, the BC Ambulance Service and the Peachland Fire Department were already on scene treating a motorcyclist suffering from serious injuries.

“Sadly, the male driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene,” said Cpl. Meghan Foster. “The next of kin has been located and notified of the driver’s passing.”

The collision caused on-and-off road closures on Highway 97 throughout Sunday afternoon but it has since reopened.

The events leading up to the crash remain under investigation.

Witnesses are urged to call the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.


UPDATE: 1:50 p.m.

Traffic remains slow on Highway 97 between Peachland and Summerland after a crash between a motorcycle and a truck.

Though vehicles are alternating both directions through a single lane of traffic, drivers in the area report severely backed up traffic as crews remain on scene.


UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.

Traffic south of Peachland is now single-lane alternating and traffic is moving slowly.

A witness on scene has reported two ambulances have left the scene with their emergency lights off.

It is not known whether either of those ambulances were transporting people injured in the crash.

The RCMP supervisor has also left the scene.

A vehicle incident has brought traffic to a standstill on Highway 97 between Peachland and Summerland.

DriveBC is reporting a crash along the highway at the intersection with Hardy Street just south of Peachland. Highway 97 is closed for 4.4 kilometres between Brent Road and Renfrew Road.

Drivers stuck in the traffic jam report traffic is stopped completely. One witness on scene says the line of cars may be a number of “kilometres long.”

It is not yet known if anybody was injured in the collision.

DriveBC says an assessment is in progress and will send updated information at 2 p.m.
