Construction of a new Canadian Tire store in Kelowna will create 150 to 175 new jobs, and is set to cost $25 million, corporate staff told Capital News on Feb. 3.

The proposed store, which will be located on the former Costco site at 2479 Highway 97 North, will be a new building that will replace the existing building on the property, according to an email statement from the company.

“It will have our latest in-store technology and more than double our selling space at the current location from just over 51,000 sq. ft. to 108,000 sq. ft. In addition, we will have our latest in-store customer pick up and our most modern auto service centre.”

Canadian Tire Real Estate Ltd. has submitted a development permit application to the City of Kelowna seeking approval to redevelop the property. The email did not state what plans the company has for its current store at 1655 Leckie Road.

The Costco site at 2479 Highway 97 was left vacant when the retail warehouse company relocated its Kelowna store to 2125 Baron Rd on Feb. 17, 2022.
