Big White Resort has officially started constructing a mountain bike trail network.

There won't be much champagne powder.

But mountain bikers can celebrate with the announcement that Big White is constructing mountain bike trails at its resort, east of Kelowna.

The resort’s goal is to create a unique riding destination in the Okanagan that speaks to the soul of mountain biking, with trails and services that are built, staffed, and provided by riders for other riders, read a press release from the resort.

“Through the years, I have become an avid gravity mountain biker and often I find my family traveling long distances to ride great trails,” said Big White’s President, Peter Plimmer. “So, I have to say that this project is as much a personal lifestyle decision as it is a business decision. We want to have an awesome place to ride close to home and I believe the personal meaning of this project to our family will differentiate us from other lift-served riding destinations.”

Big White says it is building a grassroots biking experience that will include enduro, downhill, freeride, and youth mountain bike trails adding that a combination of enthusiasm, terrain, technology, infrastructure and experience will come together to shape this unique biking experience at Big White.

With high tech LIDAR mapping in place, landscape architects Brent Harley and Associates put together the overall Trail Master Plan to create a mix of different trails that maximizes the existing resort facilities. The bike business planning, market strategy and trail construction is currently being implemented by Alpine Bike Parks.

A trail crew dedicated their time this summer to cutting and shaping trails into existing Okanagan alpine terrain. Most trails have been built and there have even been two movies filmed on them this summer.

It's expected they will open to the public in June of 2017.

“Big White Resort has some exciting collaborations and projects in the works with trendsetting riders, builders and bike industry companies,” added Plimmer. “We look forward to sharing our story with you as we undertake and continue this exciting and creative process.”
