April: Peachland Piggly Wiggly Pig Sanctuary hosts open house

Pigs have an excellent sense of direction

There are a lot of misconceptions about pigs.

For example, they are actually clean animals, and are smarter than a dog, ranked as the fifth most intelligent animal on the planet.

Facts which are well known to Faith Affleck, the owner of Star’s Piggly Wiggly Pig Sanctuary in Peachland.

Affleck hosted an open house at the sanctuary (5030 Cousins Rd.) in April 2022. The event was held to raise money for medical bills and necessities for the pigs.

The sanctuary is home to friendly hogs weighing up to 600 pounds that love to munch apples and get scratches.

Most of the pigs living on the farm were rehomed because of neglect or a change in home circumstances.

Affleck urges people to take time to research before bringing home a pet pig.

More pig facts, according to World Animal Protection:

• Pigs can’t sweat

• Mother pigs sing to their babies

• Pigs love belly rubs

• Pigs have an excellent sense of direction

• Pigs dream and like to sleep nose-to-nose

• Pigs have good memories.
