With a ka-chunk-psst, the gates opened and the first moto ripped out onto the Vernon BMX track for the first race in 21 months.
Like every other sports club, Vernon BMX was hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, but due to easing restrictions, the club welcomed back its riders of all ages on July 6.
“With restrictions lifted enough for us to get connected but still be safe and socially distant is perfect,” Vernon BMX president Shylo Orchard said ahead of the first race night in Ranger Park. “We’ve always been all-inclusive and that’s how we will startup.”
The entirely volunteer-run event saw racers from as far as Summerland to Enderby — with one rider from as far as Cochrane, Alta. — compete in their motos and the energy was high.
Applause and cheers met the riders from the stands, treats and drinks from the concession in their hands.
After crossing the finish line, it was all big smiles. Especially those first-time racers. They were each awarded a trophy to mark the accomplishment.
Sign-up for Tuesday Race Nights is open the Wednesday prior at 8 a.m. and closes Monday at 4 p.m. The cost is $5.50 per rider, but those who volunteer can get one free race on the house.
