Help for those recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's

Workshop runs at the Alzheimer Resource Centre July 23 in Kelowna.

Help is on the way for Okanagan residents living with a recent diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.

The non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. brings its free Getting to Know Dementia workshop to the area Thursday, July 23.

“Participants will receive basic information on dementia and the impact it has on the individual, their caregivers and their support network,” explained Carly Gronlund, the society’s support and education coordinator for Kelowna and the Central and North Okanagan.

The introductory session reviews the different types of support available throughout the dementia journey, planning for the future and strategies for living well.

The session is intended for people experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as family members or friends who are currently supporting a person with a recent dementia diagnosis. It is not intended for the general public or health care providers.

The workshop runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Alzheimer Resource Centre, 307-1664 Richter St. Pre-registration is required; contact Carly Gronlund at 250-860-0305 or email cgronlund@alzheimerbc.org.

The workshop is provided for free due to partial funding from the province, Provincial Employees Community Services Fund, Seacliff Foundation, RBC Foundation, Phyliss & Irving Snider Foundation, Victoria Foundation, Paul Lee Family Foundation, Merck Canada, Community Connection Health Foundation, Margaret Rothweiler Charitable Foundation, Cadillac Fairview, Lohn Foundation, Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation, Pfizer Canada Inc., Kaatza Foundation, London Drugs Foundation, Wheeler Family Foundation and by other contributions from individual donors.
