The turn-out for the Giving Tuesday celebration held at City Hall in Vernon earlier this week might not quite have been as large Linda Yule, executive director of the North Okanagan/Columbia-Shuswap United Way might have hoped, but the support of those organizations in attendance, has a huge impact on the community, she pointed out.
“There is just so much good in this room,” Yule told the crowd of approximately city council members 20 representatives from local not-for-profits and community members.
Giving Tuesday, which follows popular shopping days, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is a movement that encourages people to support causes important to them. United Way, Yule explained, historically has functioned as an umbrella organization that raises funds and distributed them among participating not-for-profit organizations. The United Way, she noted, also runs a number of supportive community programs including Success By 6, Better at Home and Days of Caring. During the 45 minute event held on Nov.28, Yule also invited Mayor Akbul Mund, and representatives from other not-for-profit organizations in attendance to talk about the programs they offer, and their impact on the community. Some of these organizations included the North Okanagan Boys and Girls Club, the Literacy Society of the North Oakanagan, the Community Foundation of the North Okanagan, Kindale and the BC 4H Club.
The Giving Tuesday Okanagan civic movement kicked off in 2015 with mayoral proclamation events in Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon. Their goal for 2017 is to encourage organizations and individuals to give back to their community with time, talent or treasure.So far more than 6,000 Canadian charities, businesses and community groups have used Giving Tuesday to rally generosity and help make the world a better place in countless ways.
