Hundreds of fish are being shipped to Enderby to reel kids into fishing.
The free Learn to Fish family event at Kingfisher Interpretive Centre takes place Sunday, July 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Children 15 and under and families are invited to a fun day of fishing, learning from local anglers, complete with rods provided, and more.
”We average around 100 to 150 kids,” said Perry Wainwright, who coordinates the annual event with Shona Bruce.
“We get 500 fish brought up from the Abbotsford Trout Hatchery.”
The fish are set free in the Interpretive Centre’s pond by Freshwater Fishers for youth to try their hand at fishing.
If that doesn’t get you hooked, Wainwright said “there’s lots to do, apart from fishing.”
Families can try their hand at knot tying, check out the nature trails, enjoy the Enderby Lions Club barbecue or get creative with rock and tree medallion painting.
“You can put it around your neck as a necklace or hang it from a tree,” said Wainwright of the wood cookies.
There will also be booths to learn about invasive species, fly casting, river safety and a smaller fish pond for littler children to throw a line in, plus a photo booth.
“They (kids) can take the fish and the picture home.”
The Interpretive Centre also has a bug soup where people can identify different bugs and the stages of their lives.
The Kalamalka Fly Fishers are the local experts on hand, volunteering their time to help kids learn to fish.
“It’s to raise awareness on how to fish and the Interpretive Centre itself and what they do out there,” said Wainwright.
