Heat 7s take 5th at nationals

UBC Okanagan men post 4-2 record at university rugby finals

The UBC Okanagan Heat men’s rugby 7s team turned its best ever showing at the Canadian University 7s Championship.

The Heat won four of six matches at the nationals March 17 and 18 in Langford to place fifth overall.

After 22-0 loss to the Victoria Vikes in the tournament opener, UBCO rebounded for a 24-14 win over Regina and a 12-10 victory over Mount Royal to finish 2-1 in thr group stage.

In the quarterfinals, the Heat once again met Victoria and were defeated 40-7 to be eliminated from cup contention.

The Heat then bounced back with a 19-15 win over Trent Excalibur.

In the the 5th/6th place game, the Heat knocked off Regina 22-10 to secure their best finish ever at nationals.

Dom Haynes had an impressive weekend individually for the Heat, finishing 10th in the tournament in scoring. His 17 points at nationals came on three tries and a conversion.
