A trip to South America as a member of Canada’s national junior athletics team was lined with silver for Lake Country’s Taryn O’Neill.

The George Elliot Secondary School athlete finished second in the 3,000 metre event last week at the Pan American U20 Championships in Trujillo, Peru.

O’Neill won the silver medal with a time of nine minutes 22.05 seconds.

O’Neill, who has won her share of provincial medals in middle distance events, captured silver medals this spring in both the 1,500 and 3,000 metres at the B.C. high school track and field championships in Langley.

O’Neill is expected back in Lake Country on Wednesday and the Lake Country Calendar will have a more in-depth story with her, once she returns to the area.
