The Okanagan College Coyotes ran into a tough match-up against the Douglas Royals last weekend. The Royals are ahead of the Coyotes in both the mens’ and womens’ standings; both teams fought to the bitter end but ultimately come back 0-4 against the Royals.

The women’s squad came up short during the weekend against the Royals, with a 64-49 loss on Friday, and a 72-54 loss Saturday. The women look to bounce back against Langara next weekend who sit just under them in the standings.

Mens’ head coach Dino Gini said the Coyotes started strong in both games.

“We played a strong first quarter and not a bad first half. We talked about what we needed to do to hold them off, as we knew they were going to come out very aggressive but we did not respond and that was disappointing, ” said Gini. “We need to mature. We need to get better.”

The men lost back to back games to the Royals. A 89-73 loss Friday despite strong showings from Christian Williams and Jackson Strother who each recorded 14 points. Then an improved performance Saturday night in a 87-81 point loss.

“We needed to respond better. We needed to come out with an edge as we knew we were going to get the pressure from them once again. We challenged each other and we needed to do this as a team and we did,” said Gini.

The Coyotes stepped up, out-scoring the Royals 26-13 in the third quarter Saturday, but it wouldn’t be enough to beat the Royals.

“We just did not finish it and we made some mistakes down the stretch but we can build from this for sure. Much better feeling after (the second game) game and a much better base to build from.”

The Coyotes season continues this weekend for both the mens and womens Coyotes squad. They host Langara College on Friday with games at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., then on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
