An Oyama tradition has been washed out by high water.

The Oyama Community Club has cancelled Oyama Fun Day June 4 because of flooding.

“It was a tough decision but the ball field and parking lot are under water,” said Deb Butler, with the club.

“We’re also concerned about the septic field because it’s just about submerged.”

Fun Day started in the 1970s and prior to that, there were May Day festivities. This could be the first time the community event has been cancelled.

“We’re all disappointed but we had to make a decision for the long-run,” said Butler of the potential for the ground water to rise higher.

Currently, there is about two feet of water in the ball field.

“We have ducks swimming in it,” said Butler.

The flooding has forced the closure of the community garden and the Royal Canadian Legion branch, while there is minimal activity in the community hall.

Water is being pumped out of the library’s crawl space.

But while the primary focus is currently on the high water, the club is also looking at ways to bring the community together.

“We hope to reschedule an event in the fall with the co-operation of Mother Nature,” states a release.
