There will only be one by-election in Lake Country on June 24.
That’s because while three candidates will vie to be the Carr’s Landing ward representative on council, the vacant Oyama ward seat had only one nominee.
Squaring off in Carr’s Landing will be D. Oscar Barnes, a Winfield lawyer who move to Carr’s Landing in 2008; Joanne de Vries, a 35-year resident of Lake Country and founder of the Fresh Outlook Foundation; and Jeanette Lambert, a Carr’s Landing resident for 27 years and former realtor who changed careers to become a controller having worked with three small businesses in the valley.
For the Oyama ward, the lone candidate is Todd McKenzie, a 10-year Oyama resident who works in the industrial equipment field.
As the only nominee, McKenzie is elected acclamation to replace Owen Dickie, who passed away earlier this year.
The Carr’s Landing seat had been held by Matt Vader, but he stepped down after being hired for a district administration position.
Reyna Seabrook, chief elections officer for election, said the candidates have until Friday, May 26, 4 p.m., to opt out of running as a candidate.
“That’s never happened in Lake Country before but they do have that option,” Seabrook said.
