Car-bus collision was preventable

On Wednesday, Jan. 23 at approximately 12:45 p.m., Lake Country RCMP responded to a report of a collision between a Ford Taurus and a city transit bus on Hwy 97 near Crystal Waters Rd.

In a statement, Cpl. Tania Carroll said the roads were wet, slushy and covered with a layer of snow when the northbound Taurus attempted to overtake the bus in a curve. The vehicle was observed swerving out of control before striking the side of the bus.

The vehicle then crossed over the meridian and landed in the ditch of the southbound lane. There were no vehicles traveling southbound when the Taurus crossed the on-coming lanes of traffic.

Minor damage was done to the bus and none of the 20 to 28 passengers or driver of the bus were injured.

The jaws of life were used to extract the female passenger from the Taurus. The 80-year-old female sustained some injuries and was taken by ambulance to Kelowna General Hospital.
The male driver, 60, had minor injuries.
The vehicle was declared a complete write off.
Neither occupant of the Taurus were wearing their seatbelts, and the tires on the vehicle were all-seasons and in poor condition.
Police warn this is another example of motorists not driving to the current weather conditions and to the conditions of the road as well as not having their vehicle equipped with the necessary tires.
